Before Imran Khan got injured right before General Elections 2013, he wanted May 9th Islamabad Jalsa to be a heart to heart conversation with Pakistanis. He told the Social Media team that “It will not be a mere political gathering, I will speak to Pakistanis about how we can become a Nation“.
In 126 days of the Dharna, Imran Khan got to connect with the Nation. He urged Pakistanis to practice honesty in every field of life and be known as the most honest nation in the world; he wanted Pakistanis to kill the Ego for the greater good; he wanted us to never be afraid to ask for our rights; and he wanted the whole country to always stand for Justice. The Youth of the country responded in abundance. They dragged their cynical parents to the Dharna to see the glimpse of Naya Pakistan and the parents also gave in to the magic of Dharna by believing in Pakistan again.
Imran Khan didn’t let the Youth down either. Day after day, he gave the priceless lessons and taught them how to conduct their lives as a leader. He cited the example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for the leadership practice that we must follow. He explained that there are no shortcuts of becoming a leader and that we must continue to work hard towards our goal.
He also told the Youth to study Allama Iqbal and his concept of “Khudi” to attain success in life. He wished that we all become “Iqbal ke Shaheen” and make valuable contributions for humanity.
On the Students day, he made one thing clear to the Youth, which was that history doesn’t remember rich people, but it remembers the people who help others.
During the Dharna, Pakistani households all across the world started tuning in at Prime Time to hear Imran Khan’s message to the Nation. Just like he had brought the concept of neutral umpires in Cricket, he wanted to make sure that the next Elections reflect the true mandate of the common Pakistani people, who should have the right to change their destiny via their vote. He wanted the Educated Middle Class to have a shot at winning the Elections, which is certainly not possible without Election Reforms. He gave HOPE to all of us and ensured that this movement is a special movement.
The Dharna was a historical movement by the people of Pakistan who stood by their Kaptaan in rain and shine to tell the Status Quo that their days are numbered. PTI also penetrated in the villages through the TV sets and the people of all demographics in Pakistan realized that the way to save Pakistan is through Free & Fair Elections.
The formation of Judicial Commission to investigate Election Rigging can be credited to the Dharna. The 126 days of hard work made it possible for PTI (and other political parties) to prove that the General Elections 2013 were not Free & Fair and Pakistan cannot afford to have Rigged Elections going forward. PTI’s strongest critics agree that this Judicial Commission is a game changer.
At the end, I am leaving you with a video tribute made by Shahmir Ahsanullah for Imran Khan, “Here is to the Crazy Ones”. “The current Youth and the Generation-next will be more daring, more politically aware, more determined, more patriotic and more eager to achieve something for the Nation, per the teachings of the Dharna. The Imran Khan era is certainly a special one.“
